William (Bill) James Turnbull was the second son of William Turnbull and Ellen Jane Gartlan. His mother resided at Burpengary, Queensland and the father had deserted his family. William was single and working as a labourer when he enlisted in Lismore, New South Wales in September 1915. He returned to Australia in September 1919 with a wife and her two children. Bill had married Rosie Ann Wells (nee Cross) on 30 November 1918 in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, England. Electoral Rolls show them living at Eumundi, Queensland from in the late 1920's. By the 1930s they were living in Wooloowin, Brisbane. Their final years were spent on the Redcliffe Peninsula in various locations. Three other brothers, John Andrew [232], Joseph Henry [3945] and Thomas [676] were also to enlist. Joseph and Thomas both died overseas. One of his sisters, Ellen Jane married Arthur Henley [5381] also from Burpengary.Death date20 May 1980
