William Joseph's parents were Patrick John Bakey and Elizabeth Fenter. When he enlisted he was single, living at Wamuran, Queensland, and his occupation was listed as a labourer. William nominated an Aunt, Mary Elizabeth King who lived at Wamuran, as next of kin. He married a Wamuran girl, Camilla Dellit, in 1925 and they lived at Wamuran.
