Henry's parents were Henry Saltmer and Catherine Orr. He had previously enlisted in the Boer War. Henry was living with his wife, Mary Jane Hare at Harrisons Pocket and working as a labourer from 1903 to 1912, they had five children. In 1912 he is listed as a coachman living at Chinchilla. Henry enlisted on 17 April 1916 in Toowoomba
