Horace's parents were William John Warnes and Edith Mary Grant. His parents lived in Strathpine prior to the war. He was working as a Horse breaker when he enlisted on 17th September 1914 at Gympie. Before he enlisted he volunteered into the NSW Military forces Volunteers 4th Infantry Regiment and served there for two years. At Anzac Cove he was made temporary Squadron Sergeant Major.
