James's parents were Patrick Joseph Ryan and Mary Agnes Hennessy. James was working as a farmer when he enlisted 7 October 1914, at the time of embarkation his address was care of the Post Office at Allora, Queensland. His sister Mary Ryan of the Grand Hotel in Brisbane was listed as his next of kin. He was promoted to Corporal on 13 May 1917. James was wounded in action in France with wounds to arms, legs thigh and face.
