Joseph's parents were Charles Adsett and Margaret Felix who were lived at Whiteside, Petrie. Joseph attended Hell Hole School at Terrors Creek now known as Dayboro. He was working as a Joiner when he enlisted on 2 October 1915 at Enoggera. Whilst serving overseas, Joseph married Christina Porteous Young McAdam on 19 September 1919 in Glasgow, Scotland.
