Percy's parents were James Kinkead Berry and Mary Anne Lacy. James Kinkead Berry was a significant pioneer of the district who oversaw the running of the Sugar Mill in Dayboro as well as representing Division Two on the Caboolture Divisional Board. Percy was the seventh youngest of nine children when he enlisted 3 August 1915 at Brisbane. He was working as a motor mechanic at Terrors Creek. He returned to Australia and settled in Chelmer. He married Muriel Louise Kerven on 27 August 1924 in Brisbane.
