Richard Dickson Thistlethwaite aged 24 years when he enlisted. He was the fourth child of Arthur Thistlethwaite and Emily Gaynor. Richard attended Clear Mountain School. His family was farmers in the district. Richard was living in Strathpine and working as a farm labourer when he enlisted on 2 October 1915 at Brisbane. Richard is listed on the electoral rolls as living at Samsonvale in 1919 his occupation was a labourer. He married Agnes Archer Innes in 1922.
