William Edward Butler was the son of Rupert Butler and Johanna Gray of Lancashire, England. He immigrated to Australia on board Kaipara arriving in Brisbane on 21 June 1911. William was single, living in Villeneuve, Woodford, Queensland, and working as a timber getter when he enlisted. He returned to Australia on 18 October 1917 after having been wounded in action. He married Lillian Evelyn Trim in 1920 and they lived in Villeneuve, however, sometime after 1928 they moved to Scarborough, Queensland.
