William's parents were Alfred Hipathite and Phoebe Crawley. They were early pioneers of the district, and among those who selected, stayed and succeeded in the period 1868 to 1900. William's father selected portion 135 at Kobble Creek and planted corn and potatoes. William attended Kobble Creek State School and was working as a dairyman when he enlisted on 21 March 1916 at Brisbane.
