Ferdinand (Ferdie) Schmidt was born on 26 May 1864 at Horheim, Stuttgart, Germany. He married Christiana Johanna Wetzel on 21 July 1889 at the Parsonage, German Lutheran Church, Enmore, New South Wales. They had both arrived in Sydney Cove on the Hohenzollern on 13 July 1889. Ferdie was a blacksmith and wheelwright. On 27 August 1895 he selected his first property at Laceys Creek as an agricultural farm, being Portion 91V Parish of Samsonvale, containing an area of 80 acres.
