Edward William Holt was born on 6 October 1863 at Southport, Lancashire, England to parents John James Holt and Jane Warnes. John and Jane and their three young children arrived in Moreton May on the Rockhampton on 31 May 1866. The Rockhampton was a fever ship with many deaths on the voyage and was quarantined on arrival. John James Holt died of typhus in quarantine at Dunwich on 14 June 1866. Jane Holt (nee Warnes) married John Warburton in Brisbane on 21 August 1868. John Warburton (Senior) selected two properties at King Scrub, Portion 45 Parish of Whiteside on 6 September 1871 and Portion 42 Parish of Whiteside on 10 January 1876. Edward William Holt married Sarah Jane Hare on 15 June 1887 at Upper North Pine. Sarah Jane Hare was born on 15 October 1868 at Oxley to parents John Hare and Eliza Johnston. John and Jane Warburton had one son, John Warburton (Junior), who married Isabella Hare, sister of Sarah Jane Hare. On the death of John Warburton on 8 March 1887 Portion 42 Parish of Whiteside was transferred to his son John Warburton (Junior) and Portion 45 Parish of Whiteside to his step-son Edward William Holt.
