Humpybong (Qld.)
DETAILS
NameHumpybong (Qld.)Alternative nameHumpy Bong (Qld.)DescriptionThe name Humpybong is a derivative of the Aboriginal words ngumpin anglicised to ‘oopie-bong’, humpy or oompie meaning shelter and bong which is presumed to mean vanished, together meaning deserted shelters. They refer to the buildings left by the first European settlers when they moved to the second settlement site on the Brisbane River. While Redcliffe was always the official name of the Peninsula, Humpybong was used by the settlers and locals right up until well into the 1930s.
From the 1840s Redcliffe, Humpybong or Humpy Bong were all used to denote the peninsula. Eventually 'Humpybong' came into popular use and for many years the names 'Redcliffe' and 'Humpybong' were interchangeable. The name 'Humpybong' was still in common use until just before WWII. In 1971 the Queensland Place Names Board officially approved the names Clontarf, Woody Point, Margate, Redcliffe, Scarborough, Kippa-Ring and Rothwell.
Humpybong State School is situated in present day Margate.
