TitleStudents of Toorbul School with their teacher in 1928DescriptionThe first Toorbul School opened near present day Pumicestone Road some 11.5km from Caboolture on a block which would now be No. 975. It was situated on Portion 8 Parish of Toorbul west of Portion 35V, Parish of Toorbul. It was known as School Reserve R.141, was surveyed in 1891 and contained 7 acres 1 rood 27 perches (3.004ha.). It is assumed that the school opened in 1891. This school closed and the land later became a Recreation Reserve and later still was sold privately. The second Toorbul School was further out along the road to Toorbul. It was about 16.5km from Caboolture on what would now probably be No. 1475. It was opposite Portion 6, Parish of Toorbul, (Elimbah Park) the property of the Bishop Family. It was known as School Reserve R.694, contained 5 acres 0 roods 3 perches (2.03ha.) and fronted Pumicestone Road and Ningi Creek. It remained as a Reserve until 1996 when it was sold at auction by the Queensland Government Education Department. A great tragedy occurred at the original school at lunchtime on 19 February 1902 when two pupils, Francis Bonney and Henrietta Kunde, were fatally burned in an accident involving a spirit stove. Due to lack of transport and no doctor in the locality, the children did not reach the Brisbane Hospital until almost 7.00pm and they died shortly afterwards. Their graves are located in the Nundah Cemetery.
