Lake Kurwongbah (Qld.)
DETAILS
NameLake Kurwongbah (Qld.)DescriptionOn 29 June 1955, an agreement was signed which led to the creation of the North Pine Water Supply Scheme. As well as providing a reticulated water supply to residents in Pine Rivers and Redcliffe, a major requirement of this project was to supply the considerable quantity of water required by APM and other expanding local industries. To mark the commencement of the Scheme, the first soil was turned at the site of the water pumping station on 18 February 1956. On November, clearing commenced on the site of the dam on Sideling Creek. Although the new dam had been named Lake Kurwongbah on 11 November 1958, the Pine Rivers Shire Council Water Supply Scheme, which included the Lake Kurwongbah storage area, a pumping station on the North Pine River with intakes both from the River and the Lake, a water treatment plant was not officially opened until 22 April 1961. The reticulated water supply by Lake Kurwongbah further encouraged urban development during the 1960s.
An earth fill dam was constructed across Sideling Creek and the resultant backwaters were given the Aboriginal name of Lake Kurwongbah. This water storage, with a total capacity of 3,400 million gallons, is used during periods of low flow in the North Pine River. The water is pumped to the Petrie treatment works where it is filtered and treated.
The earth wall has a clay core to prevent seepage and a rock face for protection against erosion by wave action. The concrete spillway is designed to take over-flow caused by flooding, without endangering the dam wall.
The Lake covers an area of 560 hectares.
