Mewes, George, 1888 - 1975
DETAILS
NameGeorge Mewes, 1888 - 1975BiographyGeorge William Mewes was born in Brisbane on 29 June 1888, the son of William Henry Mewes and his wife Bella Whitlock (nee Spark). The family lived in Brisbane, but William Mewes, who was a builder, erected a cottage near the beach at Margate and the family spent holidays there.
George is the best remembered of the early amateur photographers connected with the Peninsula. He grew up in the first era of amateur photographers generated by the inventions of George Eastman and developed his interest in photography at an early age. He purchased a motor-cycle and side-car and used to go out on photographic excursions with his sister Edith as his passenger. Some of these trips were on the Redcliffe Peninsula.
They joined the Queensland Photographic Society in 1910 and joined in field days with other members of the Society. George had a good deal of success in competitions conducted by the Society and was Vice-President in 1913.
George and Edith and their mother Bella Mewes eventually settled permanently at Redcliffe in 1949 and George maintained his interest in photography. Neither he nor Edith married.
About 1966 he had published at his own expense a book called "All in One Cameraman's Lifetime". Included in it were 262 of his photographs.
Prior to his death in 1975 he donated his cameras and photographic equipment to the Redcliffe Historical Society.
