TitleJohn Dow's bakery and general store on Gympie Road Strathpine in the mid 1920sDescriptionThis imposing bakery and store building, incorporating an upstairs residence, was built by John Dow (1867-1935) on Gympie Road near the Clyde Hotel in 1891. The Strathpine Post Office, which had opened in the Strathpine Railway Station in 1888, was transferred about 400 metres to the store on 23 December 1895. Mr Dow was granted an annual payment of 12 pounds to act as Postmaster. By 1 July 1898, the growth of postal business necessitated increasing the Postmaster's salary to 18 pounds per annum. During the following year, it was further increased to 25 pounds. The office stayed in this location for many years and John Dow (with the assistance of his daughter Annie) remained Postmaster until he retired on 1 March 1925 and moved to Sandgate. The store and postal business changed hands several times during the next ten years, but it was eventually purchased by Patrick John Bolger and operated by him from 2 December 1935 until 18 June 1945. On 2 May 1936, the building shown in this photograph was burnt down. After temporarily setting up office in a nearby garage, the Bolger family constructed a single-storey store on the site of the old building. The Post Office remained at this location until 20 September 1948 when it was transferred to new premises on the opposite side of Gympie Road.
