TitleSamford State School, built 1878DescriptionBy late 1877, the number of children in the Samford area of school age had grown to 62 and the original slab building of the Samford Provisional School (built 1872 - see PRLPC-P1579/10) was considered to be totally inadequate and unsafe due to the ravages of termites. A new school and residence was built the following year. The teacher's residence and separate kitchen can be seen in the background. The house and the detached kitchen were joined by a raised platform, as was common during that period. A covered way to the kitchen was added in the late 1880s, but these two structures were burnt down in 1906 and replaced by a single building. This photograph was taken in 1882.
