After migrating to Victoria, he made his way to Queensland, eventually selecting 155 acres of land at Laceys Creek in 1879. After his 1882 marriage to Sarah Strain (1865-1936), the daughter of a well-known local pioneering family, he gradually built up extensive land holdings for his dairy cows, pigs and crops.
