TitleJohn McKenzie (1828-1908), pioneer of DayboroDescriptionJohn McKenzie and his wife Janet (nee Fulton) (1834-1913), migrated to Moreton Bay in 1855. In 1866, after living in Fortitude Valley where their first three children were born, they moved to the Terrors Creek (Dayboro) area. By settling on the south bank of the North Pine River about two kilometres south of the town site, they became the first known inhabitants of the area. Having access to unlimited supplies of superb timber, John McKenzie operated a pit sawmill from which he supplied sawn timber to Brisbane and to many local pioneering families. A family notebook also indicates that he sold timber to William Henry Day for the construction of the local sugar mill. On 19 November 1868, after the first land surveys were completed in the area, he was able to purchase the land on which he had settled, then known as Fishery Pocket. A further four children were born after the family moved to the Upper North Pine area. Many descendants of the McKenzie family still live in the Pine Rivers Shire.Record typePhotographFormat typePhysicalOriginal format colourBlack and white
