TitleJack Barbour's store, corner of Gympie Road and Station Street Strathpine, ca. 1922DescriptionJack (John Charles) Barbour (1880-1956) was a saddler and harness maker. Barbour was well-known for his versatility. In addition to conducting his saddlery trade, he cut hair and expanded the shop into a general store which stocked an enormous range of goods. Valuation records indicate that he acquired the building in 1905 and it is known that he remained the proprietor of the store until the time of his death. The store was built and opened in 1886 as a grocery shop by Robert Nesbitt (1850-1918), the first storekeeper in the Strathpine area. Nesbitt, who served for one year (1888) as a member of the Pine Divisional Board, sold the business in 1898. After a couple of rapid changes of ownership, the building (on Resubs. 10-12, Sub. 1, Portion 85, Parish of Warner) was acquired by Jack Barbour. There are two men standing on the verandah of the store and two horses tied up in front.
