Hat pins were designed to secure the ever-larger ladies hats and grew to between twenty-five and thirty centimetres in length with the Edwardian fashion for very large hats. The long, pointed metal object could also serve as an instrument of self-defence at a time when women were increasingly travelling unaccompanied in public.
