A lady of this era would not need to carry much while out of the house. Money was not required because any purchases would usually be made on account. The most common items in a lady’s purse would be a delicate silk or cambric handkerchief; a small coin purse; and calling cards in an ornate case. She could also carry some small essentials like scissors or a pencil.
Women did not carry grooming items like a comb, mirror or cosmetics. A woman was expected to perform all her hair styling and dressing at home and not be seen making adjustments in public.
