Accession numberRMG-5599MeasurementsH250 x W303mmHistoryThe bowler is a hard, domed hat originally designed in 1849 as a low-crowned, protective hat for gamekeepers. Gamekeepers had previously worn top hats for riding which were in danger of being knocked off and damaged by tree branches. The bowler was popular amongst the working classes before becoming synonymous with the British banker or office worker of 20th century London.
