During the Victorian era, gloves were an essential part of every woman’s daily wear. Modesty was foremost for the upper-class woman, and gloves were required to be long enough to meet the sleeve, and not reveal the skin of the arm or wrist. Evening gloves were long and could perhaps reveal a small area of skin when worn with a daring short-sleeved evening gown.
A Victorian era woman removed her gloves only to eat or respond to the call of nature. Gloves were considered essential for good health as a barrier between a lady and the disease-ridden outside world.
White or cream kid leather gloves were popular throughout the 1800s. Contrasting stitching or embroidery was fashionable in the 1860s.
