The name was suggested to acknowledge and preserve the identity of the neighbouring Fernlands Estate. Fernwood combines the ferns (bracken) that are to be found in the area with the fact that the developer incorporated the name 'wood' into every street name in Fernlands. Approved by the Pine Rivers Shire Council on 7 December 1999 (99/4197).
