Atkinson Park was named for Thomas Foster Atkinson who was born in Warwick in 1908 and lived in that district until 1955 when he moved to Redcliffe. A builder by trade, Tom was employed on all aspects of construction work and was particularly involved with the implementation of the sewerage scheme in Redcliffe. He held the position of secretary of the Redcliffe Chamber of Commerce and was president of the Redcliffe A H and I Society for nine years. He was appointed alderman to the Redcliffe City Council as a replacement for Alderman MacAdam in October 1973 and elected for the following term in 1976. The park was named for Tom Atkinson in recognition of his 23 years of service to the community through his involvement with the Show Society. Mrs Atkinson’s contribution was also recognised. -- Redcliffe : Looking at the landscape by Pat Gee acknowledging the work of Jack Stapleton and Pat Fields
