Bertie Dow Park is named for Albert William (Bert) Dow who was a long time resident of Redcliffe. He was born at Kuraby 1907 and moved to Redcliffe pending his marriage to Bessy Olive Twibble in 1930. His early years were spent driving for Elson's Red Bus Service. He then went on to open a small garage in Kate Street Woody Point, in an old butcher shop in 1935. He opened a new garage at Woody Point oppposite the School of Arts in 1938 and conducted business until 1946 except for a three year stint serving in the Army. His wife Bessy carried on the business whilst he conducted a taxi service until 1950 when he started Peninsula Tyre and Retreading Coin Jamieson Street Redcliffe. He retired from business in 1961 after National Tyre Service-Tyresoles took out a lease on the property. He retired to enjoy gardening, bowling and card playing at the weekly gathering at the house of the late Mrs Cousins in Margate. He died on 12 July 1991. Six years later his wife died in July 1997.
