Bicentennial Park was named for the Australian Bicentennial celebrations held in 1988 to celebrate the arrival of the First Fleet in Australia in 178. Australia held a year of celebrations in 1988 to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the country. Events were co-ordinated by the Australian Bicentennial Authoriy, with individual states, cities and other organisations mounting their own celebrations. As a lead up to the celebrations local government authorities were able to obtain grants for suitable projects and Bicentennial Park was the result of one of these grants. -- Redcliffe : Looking at the landscape by Pat Gee acknowledging the work of Jack Stapleton and Pat Fields
