Henry Pieper Park, Kippa-Ring (Qld.)

Henry (Harry) Pieper came to the Redcliffe Peninsula from Marburg in 1912 with his parents, four sisters and his brother Frank. The family settled in bark humpies near the mango trees in what is now Kroll Gardens, moving to a little house in Duffield Road about four years later. Harry’s first job was that of yardman at Orient House, a large boarding house on Marine Parade, when he was 19. He soon acquired a truck and did contract work for the Redcliffe Town Council before accepting a permanent position on Council staff in 1922. Harry married Gertrude Jenkinson in 1923 and they settled in McCulloch Avenue at Margate. Harry worked for the council for 43 years. He drove council’s first tractor and maintained the pipes under the Hornibrook Bridge for the water supply.
