The 20 acre site for Kroll Gardens off Duffield Road was set aside for botanic gardens in 1974 and was named for Cecil Kroll. Cecil Ernest Kroll was born in Ipswich in 1914. The family moved to Redcliffe in the mid-twenties and Cecil was educated at Humpybong State School. After leaving school Cec conducted a mixed business at Redcliffe before joining the Army in 1942. After his discharge in 1946 he worked in grocery and hardware before opening his own grocery business in Redcliffe. The Krolls also ran a farm in western Redcliffe before settling at Clontarf. In 1958 Cec was elected to Council as an alderman. He was re-elected in 1961 and then elected mayor in 1964. He was returned as mayor in 1967 and 1970, un-apposed in 1973 but defeated in 1976. Cec died in 2004. -- Redcliffe : Looking at the landscape by Pat Gee acknowledging the work of Jack Stapleton and Pat Fields
