How do I limit my search?
Use the drop down options below the search bar to limit your search by Format, Digitised Status and Date, or Within Data to choose whether you search just the title, metadata or content, or Search For to choose whether you are doing a keyword or phrase search.
Once you have run your search, you can limit the results from the Filter By menu on the left hand side. Select Format to limit by item type eg photograph, document or video. Select the arrow to display more limits within those item types.
How do I search only photographs?
From the Search screen click the Format button, untick Check All/Uncheck All, and scroll down until you find Photograph - tick the box and your search will be limited to just photographs. The same applies to other formats, such as documents.
You can also Browse photographs or another specific format by selecting Browse All, and then limit your search by Format using the Filter By menu on the left hand side. Choose Photograph and then add extra limits such as Photographer, Collection or Record Type.
How do I refine my search?
Once you have run your search, you can limit the results from the Filter By menu on the left hand side. Select Format to limit by item type such as photograph, document or video. Select the arrow to display more limits within those item types.
You can also further refine your search by selecting the Refine Search Terms button under the search box.
Select Add or Restrict Keywords and enter the keywords you want to add or restrict.
Choose AND, OR or NOT depending on how you want to refine your search and enter your keywords:
AND - the keyword must be included in any item returned
OR - the keyword may be included but does not have to be present. It always relates to the previous keyword/s. - It cannot follow NOT
NOT - do not include this term. - Cannot be followed by an OR.
To remove a keyword - click X.
To return to your original search terms - click Clear.
You can add several limits eg an AND term and an OR term.
Click Update Search to run your search with the new limits.

From the Filter By menu on the left hand side, select Format to limit by item type. Select the arrow to display more limits within those item types.
