Early Bribie in colour / by Warwick Outram ; paintings by Ron Powell.
DETAILS
TitleEarly Bribie in colour / by Warwick Outram ; paintings by Ron Powell.DescriptionThis book covers pre-World War II Bribie Island, at that time Brisbane's most popular tourist resort, serviced by a number of ships including SS Koopa and SS Doomba. 'Early Bribie in Colour' is illustrated with oil paintings by Ron Powell. It touches on the huge early Pumicestone Passage oyster industry of the 1890s which subsequently faded to nothing from a then-unknown cause. Recreational and commercial fishing also rapidly declined. In 1904 the Amateur Fishermen's Association was formed to try and correct the position. Today its headquarters are at Bribie Island and a portion of its very large collection of fish specimens is displayed in the Bribie Museum. Initially, the cause the decline in fish, oyster and other seafood stocks was unknown. The cause is now well known but Government Departments and Councils appear to consider the problem too big to attempt a fix. Fish stocks in Pumicestone Passage and Moreton Bay appear to be expendable. With the advent of World War II, particularly in the Pacific with the enemy in Australian Territory, the military took over the whole of Bribie Island. All civilians were ordered off the island except for some essential service civilians, the school closed, homes and businesses were commandeered including the passenger ships servicing the island. The war ended on 15 August 1945 but it took nearly 30 years to restore Bribie's permanent population to its pre-war numbers of about 1100, leading local people to refer to Bribie as a 'war casualty'.Personal authorOutram, Warwick, author Powell, Ron (Artist)ImprintBongaree, Queensland : Warwick Outram Publications, 2017.LanguageEnglishDate2017Collation50 pages : colour illustrations, portraits ; 29 cm.ISBN9780994304483Bib. formatBooksNotes"Featuring Ron Powell's paintings" --Cover.; Includes index.
