SS Cormorant : protecting Bribie Island from ca.1958 - 1990 / research and cover painting by Ron Powell, with additional material [written] by Warwick Outram.
DETAILS
TitleSS Cormorant : protecting Bribie Island from ca.1958 - 1990 / research and cover painting by Ron Powell, with additional material [written] by Warwick Outram.DescriptionCommonly called 'the wreck', SS Cormorant rested on the beach at Bongaree for some 30 years, a familiar landmark, even a tourist attraction. Children and adults climbed all over her, swam or played on the sand nearby and fished from the rusting deck. When she deteriorated and became dangerous, Caboolture Shire Council broke her up in 1990, and removed her from the beach. As she had been part of the community for so long, discussions took place about erecting a monument to the Cormorant, but nothing eventuated and the community quickly forgot the wreck. Twenty-five years later, Bribie has its own museum, and volunteer guide Ron Powell is often asked about "That ship that was on the beach near here, what was her name, when was she wrecked, what was her story?" Ron believes that those who asked this type of question may have first seen it as youngsters, and were now obviously disappointed that the museum did not have reference material about the shipwreck. Ron began his collections about 1969, had taken many photographs, knew a little, and Warwick Outram had mentioned the wreck in his books, but they were not familiar with the ship's history, apart from the name, and that a resident had beached it there to prevent erosion. Ron sought more information from the Queensland State Library and the Maritime Museum, and Warwick Outram compiled the book. Ron says, "We owe a big thank you to Queensland State Library and the National Maritime Museum for their assistance in research".Personal authorOutram, Warwick, author Powell, RonImprintBongaree, Queensland : Warwick Outram Publications, 2015.; ©2015.EditionSecond edition.LanguageEnglishDate2015-Collation51 pages : illustrations (some colour), map ; 22 x 30 cm.ISBN9780994304438Bib. formatBooksNotesIncludes index.
