His father died in 1894 and his mother married George Edwin Bishop in 1915. He was single, a fisherman and living with his mother & stepfather at Toorbul when he enlisted in October 1916. Alexander Thomas suffered a severe head injury during battle resulting in a depressed fracture and laceration to the brain.
