Arthur's parents were Robert Speedy and Eliza/Elizabeth Gallagher. Arthur married Jane Gilfoyle in 1894 at Brisbane, they had a son in 1898. Arthur was living at Enoggera and working as a Grocer when he enlisted on 25 January 1916. Arthur's unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT A49 Seang Choon on 4 May 1916. He was admitted to hospital with Double Hallux Valgus, cartilage, bony, and soft-tissue damage to his feet. He was considered medically unfit and returned to Australia 17 July 1916.
