Charles was the son of Alexander Thornton and Elizabeth Brown who lived at Glenfern, Kilcoy, Queensland. His father had died in 1904 in Kilcoy. Charles was 19 years old, working as a timber getter and living at Woodford, Queensland, when he enlisted on 13 January 1916. His unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, on board HMAT Clan McGillivray on 1 May 1916 and he returned to Australia on 6 April 1919.
