Edward Henry Randall Phelps was the son of Henry Randall Phelps and Mary Helena Fowkes. His father had died in 1897 and his mother then married James Joseph Haylan in 1906. Edward was 24 years old, working as a Police Constable and living in Brisbane when he enlisted in February 1915. He embarked with the 4th Lighthorse Field Ambulance as a Farrier Corporal in June 1915 and returned to Australia on 20 April 1919.
