George was the son of George Bishop and Anna Ferling who lived in Caboolture, Queensland. In 1912 George was sworn in as a Special Constable in Brisbane, Queensland, and subsequently joined the Queensland Constabulary, serving in Townsville, Queensland. He then left to manage his father's (George (Senior)) property at Linville in West Queensland prior to enlisting on 8 October 1915. George was age 21 when he enlisted. His unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Borda on 5 June 1916.
