Luke's parents were Samuel Coe and Frances Fisher who were early settlers in the South Pine area. He was the youngest of seven children. Luke enlisted at Brisbane on 15 March 1916. He embarked from Sydney on HMAT Demosthenes A64 on 18 May 1916. Luke was killed in action on 2 August 1917 when he was hit by a sniper.
