There were ten children in the family. John French was born on 24 March 1869 at Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, Scotland to parents Richard French and Mary Jane McEwen (Refer to MBPS-0003-003 for a photograph of Richard French and Mary Jane French (nee McEwen)). He was their third child. The family went to Northern Ireland (Richard was Irish) where three more children were born before emigrating. The family arrived in Moreton Bay on the Indus on 29 December 1874. Another four children were born at Bald Hills before the family moved to Mt Pleasant in 1884. The younger children would have attended Upper North Pine School and the older children, including Jack, would have worked on the farm. John (Jack) French moved to north Queensland for work as he married Mary Jane Jones on 30 June 1904 at Ingham. Mary Jane Jones was born on 3 June 1879 at Charters Towers to parents William Jones and Jane Edwards.
