TitleRound House at Moray Field Park in the 1920sDescriptionA building of history caught by chance in an action photograph taken by Mr E.C. Ted Newton in the 1920s. In December 1978 Mr Ted Newton recalled the old Kanaka Round House at Moray Field. It had no iron fittings to fasten manacles. The Kanakas used to build a big open fire in the middle and sleep in bunks up the wall. It was an eight sided building with a big iron dome on the top to let the smoke out. The building was made of weatherboards with shingles on the roof and slept between 20 and 30 people. To his knowledge it was built specially as a place for the Kanakas to sleep at night. It is easy to realise that it could be a very secure dormitory. Two years after Queensland became a State The Guardian Newspaper on 9 June 1861 reported on the trials of those who attempted to grow cotton along the banks of the Caboolture River, sugar followed. An old report states that the largest sugar mill and plantation on the southern bank of the Caboolture River was owned by the Raff Brothers on the property known as Moray Field Park and that one hundred South Sea Islanders were employed on this property. Unwritten accounts passed down through the generations tell that the Kanakas were secured in the round house each night.
