Later he went to Townsville leaving his job in the Railway Department to branch out into coaching. He had the ability to become a member of the Foley Shield Team and become the Townsville Coach as well. Ken Day represented North Queensland and from there he was selected for the Australian Team which toured New Zealand. He earned a position in the Australian Team which toured England and France in 1963/1964. He won seven Australian Jerseys in Tests as well as playing two games against South Africa.
