At Caboolture State School he won a scholarship to Brisbane Boys' Grammar School. In 1899 he attended Sydney University on a Queensland scholarship. In 1907 he gained his Doctor of Science with first class honours. He was the Queensland Government Geologist from 1917 to 1922. He was later appointed Australian Government Geologist to the Northern Territory.
