TitleCobb & Co. coach crossing the long logging on Gympie Road, North Pine district (now Kallangur), mid 1880sDescriptionRoad access to the Pine Rivers region was limited until the discovery of gold at Gympie in 1867. Prior to this time, the first roads crossed the South Pine River at Cash's Crossing and the North Pine River at Gordons Crossing or Youngs Crossing. In 1868, the opening up of a coastal route to Gympie allowed Cobb & Co. coaches to expand local passenger and mail services. It was in wet weather such as this that the all weather road through Narangba would have been a better proposition than the dry weather or coastal route through Burpengary preferred by many drivers, as in this instance. It has been recorded by many Cobb & Co. travellers that the worst part of the journey to Gympie was the first section from Brisbane to Caboolture (Qld.). The flooded area in the photograph has been identified as the long logging on Freshwater Creek, one of many similar areas where saplings were laid on boggy road sections of the road to build up the carriage way.
