Melva was born in Invercargill, New Zealand. In 1960 she came to live in Queensland, the birthplace of her husband Colin Welch. She became an Australian Citizen in 1982. In 1987 the Pine Rivers Shire Council presented Melva with the Australia Day Citizen Award in recognition for her devotion to the Hills District community of the Shire. In 1990, the Pine Rivers Shire Council appointed Melva Welch to be local Historian of Bunya and Bunyaville, encouraging her to continue the historical search and recording for future seekers of information.
Melva Welch was the editor of the Adviser newspaper for 25 years until she retired from the position in September 1988.
