Australian Red Ensign
In 1901, the Australian Government announced a competition to design a flag for Australia. Entrants were asked to send a design for two flags – one for official and naval purposes and the other for merchant ships. The result was a Blue Ensign and a Red Ensign. The Red Ensign was intended to be the official flag for Australian registered merchant ships. The flag, however, was also used by civilians on land and was taken onto battlefields by soldiers.
Confusion was resolved with the Flags Act 1953. The Act proclaimed the Blue Ensign as the Australian National Flag. The Australian Red Ensign was the official flag to be flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships.
