Red Cross Prisoner of War appeal discs
The Red Cross emblem is one of the most recognised and important emblems in the world. It was chosen by the drafters of the First Geneva Convention in 1864. They were looking for a symbol that could be worn on the battlefield to identify military medical personnel and the injured they were assisting. In honour of the Swiss founders of the Red Cross, they chose the reverse of the Swiss flag.
For 160 years the emblem has saved lives. In armed conflict the Red Cross means ‘don’t shoot’ – this person, site, vehicle or equipment is not part of the fight, but is providing impartial assistance.
