Entrenched in religious tradition, inspired by nature and modernised by advertising, red along with green has become synonymous with Christmas. The combination of colours is so ingrained into our Western society, that whenever most of us see the two of them together, we think of Christmas.
Throughout the Bible, red symbolises the blood of Jesus Christ. Green represents the evergreen tree, representing eternal life as it stays this hue throughout the winter. Advertising has also played an important role in shaping our associations. Mirroring the brand’s colour, Coca-Cola released advertisements in the 1930s showing a Santa Claus in a red coat. For Haddon Sundblom, the artist who created the original magazine advertisements, the inspiration came from Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas – more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas.
