DESCRIPTION

Description

The Koopa steamship was completed in 1911. It was specifically built and fitted for the Moreton Bay excursion trade. It was a twin screw, steel, coal-burning steamer with a gross tonnage of 416, a length of 192.6ft, beam of 28.1ft and draught at the stern of 8.6ft, enabling it to enter the Bribie Passage (Pumicestone Passage) even at low tide.

The Koopa was certified to carry up to 1,200 passengers. The promenade, main deck and saloons were illuminated with no fewer than 159 electric lamps and there was also a confectionery stall, light refreshments and a bar.

The Koopa made its first trip on the afternoon of Christmas Day 1911. From 1912, the Koopa ran regular services throughout the week to Redcliffe, with Bribie Island included on Sundays.
